Baby's First Surgery - Lukie Edition

After spending his first six months of life lulling us into believing he would be the better sleeping, healthier baby, Luke went in for tubes-in-adenoids-out last week.  Originally I wasn't sure the ENT would send us in for tubes on our first visit, but as soon as I told him L had had two rounds of rocefin the doc held up his hand to cut me off and said, "yeah, he needs tubes".  Which was a relief.  Tubes were the greatest thing to happen to Genevieve so we are hopeful for the same response this time around.  And as long as L was under, the doc took out his adenoids too.  I'm going to miss that little pug snort of his.

We checked in super early and watched the fish while paperwork was processed.  They had a wagon on the floor which Boo immediately found and insisted on being wheeled around in.  We got back to the pre-op rooms and changed into mandatory surgery pj's, then Luke continued to entertain the staff by taking his puppy fussy up and down the corridor in the wagon.  Without knowing what was going on, he ended up walking himself back to surgery.  But as soon as those doors closed and mom was gone, he started to scream.  So awful to hear your baby on the other side of the door knowing you can't go in!
where does this ride go?

The whole procedure was about 45 minutes.  I wanted to try to just chill out in the pre-op room but there were at least three or four different nurses who came and put their arms around me saying, "you ok mom?  You doing ok?"  I know I'm not a super emotional parent, but I started to get paranoid thinking they had to know something I didn't.  When the ENT came out he said everything was smooth and that L's adenoids were huge, so I was glad to know we made the right decision to take them out.  A couple minutes later I could once again hear my little man on the other side of the door. And he was mad as a hornet.

not.happy.
He had an IV because of the adenoids and of course had not eaten or drank anything for about 14 hours, all adding up to him being inconsolable.  They finally got him some juice which he slammed but all was not right until he horked it back up.  I brought both a back up set of clothes and a back up to the back up, and as soon as we were cleaned up he totally chilled out and almost immediately zonked in my arms.  Poor little bubs.

back home for a marathon nap
After the young prince awoke from his slumber he was happier and hungry.  I tried to get him to take it easy but there was no stopping him.

his mouth did not detach from this banana the entire time he ate it.  not even while he chewed.

mom, i am concentrating on this.  quit taking pictures.
After a full belly he was back at it, like nothing had happened.  And since the weather was non-horrible and I am a major believer in the power of a little fresh air and sun, we even headed outside for a time.

let's take Dolphie for a ride

HEY EVERYONE I JUST HAD SURGERY 7 HOURS AGO BUT DO YOU WANT TO COME PLAY WITH ME?
Matt stayed home with the patient on Tuesday. He did well but had a little fever cooking Tuesday night and Wednesday.  He's been getting up again at night but between the healing and a cold that won't let go I think we just need to give it some time.

yay, daddy's home to play!
We're also hopeful that the clearing of the ears helps with his language development.  He's right on track for his age but he's also been listening like he's under water.  Hopefully in the coming weeks and months I eat my words about wanting him to talk more.  Two chatterboxes in the house?  Lord give us strength!
